*NEW* Process for the Scientific Sessions:

We are excited about the changes for WINDPOWER 2010 to give more focus to the scientific track sessions. We hope that you will be interested in submitting an abstract for the 'improved' scientific track and help us to continue to ensure the highest quality and depth of the scientific and engineering research results presented at the worlds largest wind event. We need your most recent, best results to showcase the new research being undertaken to improve the efficiency of wind turbines and deployment of wind energy and to illustrate the excellent research being undertaken in the United States and elsewhere.

Categories Considered for the Scientific Sessions:

Performance and Reliability
- Wind Forecasting

- Wind Integration
- Resource Assessment
- Wind Turbine Technology: Structures, Dynamics, Loads, and Control

Criteria for the Extended Abstract (Due September 28):
- Should be 3-10 pages in length
- Should include objectives and scope of the work, methods used, results obtained, contributions to the field, and key supporting figures and data

- Must include new issues or data that can be used to advance the industry
-
Unless otherwise notified, the primary author will be considered the presenter
- The style of writing may be brief and incomplete, as long as the essential steps in the research are clear and convincing
- It has to describe work that has already been started by the time of abstract submission, not work that will be done

Each podium presentation for scientific sessions will be approximately 30 minutes in length, including the questions and answers. The authors will be invited to submit their final papers to a scholarly journal for consideration for publication. The deadline for the final paper is May 10, 2010.

Extended abstracts must be submitted online by September 28, 2009, if the abstract fits into one of the scientific topic areas above. This does not apply to poster presenters. Please note that abstracts that are technical are NOT required to submit an extended abstract, but technical and scientific abstracts will be required to submit a final paper by May 10, 2010

Authors who wish to be considered for EITHER a technical or scientific podium spot will need to submit one regular abstract under technical and one extended abstract under scientific, but only one will be selected.

Technical vs. Scientific:

Technical: Typically focuses on the application of technology to solve specific problems. The technology is commonly current state-of-the-art, but it may advance the current state-of-the-art. These papers usually report on hardware-specific changes or modifications.

Scientific: Typically deals with systematic studies to gain in-depth insight into problems and solutions, advancing the current technology state-of-the-art. They usually report on basic research involving fundamental principles and frequently include some combination of theory, experimentation and/or simulation.

For example, a technical paper on Resource Assessment might describe a program to model the wind resources at a site to aid in determining optimum placement of the turbines at that site. A scientific paper, on the other hand, might describe the physics of the wind flow in the vicinity of the site and a novel method to numerically model it, even though the method might not yet be practical for commercial use.
